Your tax professional should understand your business

Jeff Hockett, EA has prepared tax returns since 1991 and has been a licensed REALTOR® since 2004. That combination gives Hockett Tax firsthand experience with the tax issues real estate professionals deal with every day — from vehicle expenses and quarterly estimates to S corporations, rental properties, depreciation and investment-property sales.

For agents and brokers

  • Quarterly estimates set from what you are actually earning, so commission income does not arrive with a surprise bill
  • Vehicle, mileage and home-office deductions documented through the year, not reconstructed in April
  • Whether an S-corp election is worth it yet — and the payroll to support it if it is
  • Brokerage 1099s reconciled against what you were actually paid
  • Retirement contributions that do more for a strong year than a last-minute deduction hunt

For investors, landlords and short-term rental owners

  • Short-term and vacation rentals — classification, personal-use days and lodging tax
  • Depreciation set up correctly, including improvements versus repairs
  • Passive loss rules — what you can use this year and what carries forward
  • Sales and 1031 exchanges planned before closing, when the timing can still be changed
  • Property in another state — we file multi-state returns routinely

Planning appointments are included in every membership. If you are weighing a sale, a purchase, a refinance or a new entity, that is exactly when to call — one client who called two months too late paid about $42,000 more than they needed to. Read that story.

How it works on the coast

Everything runs through the secure client portal, by phone and by video — no office visit needed. Hockett Tax is registered to do business in Alabama and holds a City of Foley business license. Pricing is the same flat monthly membership we use in Arizona; agents with an S corporation typically start at Gold, Platinum or Titanium.

He is very responsive, fast, and efficient. His website has a portal that makes it very easy to upload every document and keeps everything organized. FAQ

Questions from Gulf Coast real estate clients

Should I set up an S corporation for my real estate business?

Sometimes. Once your commission profit is consistently high enough, an S-corp election can reduce self-employment tax — but it also means running payroll, paying yourself reasonable compensation and filing a separate return. We run your actual numbers and tell you which side of the line you are on.

I own a short-term rental in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach. Can you handle it?

Yes. How the property is classified, personal-use days, lodging tax, what is deductible against the rental and what happens when you sell all change the result. Bring your rental statements to the consultation and we will walk through it.

Do I need to meet you in person?

No. Alabama clients work with us through the secure client portal, by phone and by video. You upload documents, we ask our questions, and you review and sign electronically.

Which membership do real estate agents usually choose?

An agent filing as a sole proprietor usually fits Bronze or Silver, depending on rentals. Agents with an S corporation or partnership typically start with Gold, Platinum or Titanium, which include both the business and personal returns. See pricing.
