Tax preparation for Baldwin County and the Alabama Gulf Coast

Hockett Tax now works with clients across Foley, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Elberta — led by an Enrolled Agent, with a local number and the same year-round approach we have used in Arizona since 1991.

How it works here

The Alabama practice runs remotely, and that is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation. You send documents through the secure client portal, we ask our questions by phone or email, and you review and sign electronically. There is no drive, no waiting room, and no afternoon lost to an appointment.

Call (251) 202-9789 and you reach the same two people who prepare the return. When we call you back, that is the number you will see.

Who we work with on the coast

Owners of short-term and vacation rentals. Baldwin County runs on them, and they are the most commonly mishandled return we see. How the property is classified, personal-use days, lodging tax, what is deductible against the rental, and what happens on a sale — each of those changes the number, and the decisions that matter are made before year end, not in April.

Real estate agents and investors. Jeff has been a licensed REALTOR since 2004 and ran property management alongside the tax practice, so commission income, closing statements and rental schedules do not need translating first.

Small businesses and S corporations. Entity choice, reasonable compensation, payroll, bookkeeping and the 1120S itself — handled together rather than by three people who never speak.

People who have just moved here. A relocation year is the year most likely to produce a letter. Part-year residency, income allocated between states, and a change in what your home state expects of you afterwards all need getting right the first time.

Moving to Alabama from another state

If you have relocated — or are about to — the useful conversation happens before the move completes, not after the return is filed. Residency is a question of facts, and the facts are much easier to establish while they are happening than to reconstruct a year later. If you are mid-move, book a call and we will tell you what to document now.

Same firm, both coasts

Hockett Tax is a father-and-son practice: Jeff Hockett has prepared returns since 1991 and has been an Enrolled Agent since 2019; Justin Hockett is a Certified Bookkeeper and handles personal returns, bookkeeping and administration. The firm is registered to do business in Alabama and holds a City of Foley business license. Our Arizona office remains open and our Arizona clients are unaffected.

Pricing is the same in both markets — flat monthly memberships from $40, or a one-off annual return if a membership is not what you need.

FAQ

Questions from Baldwin County clients

Do I need to come into an office?

No. Everything runs through the secure client portal, by phone and by video. You upload your documents, we ask our questions, you review and sign electronically. Most of our Baldwin County clients never meet us in person, and the work is identical either way.

I moved to Alabama part-way through the year. Is that a problem?

It is a part-year return in each state, and it is routine for us — multi-state filing is a large part of what this firm does. What matters is establishing when residency actually changed and allocating income to the right state either side of that date. Get it wrong and you can end up taxed twice on the same dollars, or filing in a state you no longer owe.

I have a rental in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach. Can you handle it?

Yes, and it is one of the reasons we opened here. Short-term coastal rentals carry questions that an ordinary 1040 preparer does not see often: how the property is classified, what happens on the days you use it yourself, lodging tax, what is deductible against the rental and what is not, and what changes if you ever sell. Bring your rental statements and we will walk through it.

Which states can you file in?

All of them. Jeff is an Enrolled Agent, which is a federal credential — it allows representation before the IRS in any state, and there is no separate state license required to prepare returns. We already file Alabama, Arizona, California, Arkansas and Ohio among others.

Is the Alabama practice a different firm?

No. Same firm, same people, same portal. Hockett Tax is registered to do business in Alabama and licensed with the City of Foley. Your files and history stay in one place whichever number you call.
