Tax monitoring

Have you ever wondered what the IRS actually has on file about you? With your authorization we can look at your transcripts — and keep looking.

What transcripts show

With your authorization we access your IRS transcript records — up to ten years back, plus every return going forward as we file it. Transcript monitoring can identify:

  • Posted account activity and transaction codes
  • Balances owed, penalties and accruing interest
  • Income reported to the IRS about you by third parties, and discrepancies against your return
  • Processing issues and unclaimed or delayed refunds
  • Certain notice-related transaction codes
  • Signs that someone has filed using your identity
  • Eligibility for administrative penalty relief

It may alert us to some problems earlier than you would otherwise hear about them. Transcripts do not display every internal IRS action, and no monitoring service can guarantee advance notice of an audit.

Why earlier is better

The IRS is a complex organization with many moving parts. When your return is filed it runs through their software, which compares everything on it against what third parties reported — employers, mortgage companies, the issuers of every 1099 you received. Every form that comes to you at tax time is also filed with the IRS by the person who sent it, and the IRS matches the two.

When information reported to the IRS does not match the return, the IRS may generate discrepancy or review activity — commonly a CP2000 notice proposing changes to what was filed. That work runs well behind, so an item can sit for many months before anything reaches you. Activity posted to your account shows on the transcript, so a discrepancy is often visible to us before a letter arrives. Where it is, that gives us time to reach you, work out whether there was a mistake, and amend the return if one is needed.

Interest does not start when the IRS gets around to your file. It accrues from the date the money should have been paid — so by the time a letter arrives there can be months, sometimes years, of interest attached to it. Catching the issue early is what keeps that number small.

What it has been worth

We have helped clients save thousands of dollars through administrative penalty relief and by catching problems early. Results depend on what is actually on your account, but the cost of looking is low — which is why we offer it at a low annual fee and include it outright in the Platinum and Titanium memberships.

Monitoring starts at $35. Audit protection, which pairs naturally with it, starts at $9. Both are included from Platinum up.

FAQ

Common questions

Does the IRS know you are looking at my transcripts?

Yes — access runs through a signed authorization you give us. Nothing happens without your permission.

Will this stop an audit?

No, and be wary of anyone who says otherwise. Transcripts do not show the IRS’s internal audit-selection decisions, and monitoring cannot guarantee warning. What it can do is surface a discrepancy or a balance early enough that we correct it first, which is how some problems stop growing.

What penalty relief might I qualify for?

Both forms turn on the same thing: an otherwise clean compliance history. First-Time Abate covers earlier periods and has to be requested — the penalty is assessed first and removed afterwards, and many people who qualify never ask. From the 2025 tax year and 2026 quarterly filings onward, the IRS is moving to Automatic Exemption from Penalty, which applies without a request where the prior three years (or twelve consecutive quarters) were filed and paid on time. We check your transcripts either way.
